OSB is not a waterproof board

OSB is an engineered panel made by pressing oriented wood strands with resin. It can be used for roof, wall and floor sheathing and general building work, but its grade and service condition must be read from the mark and manufacturer documentation. Even a moisture-resistant panel is not automatically suitable for permanent immersion, use as exposed finish or unplanned exterior exposure.

APA recommends matching exposure classification to jobsite and in-service conditions, while EGGER calls for dry, ventilated storage. Do not purchase by thickness alone: identify application, strength axis, edge profile, product standard and installation instructions. For structural roofs, floors or walls, the engineer must determine thickness, support spacing and fastening pattern.

Keep packs flat, supported and off the ground

Never place panels directly on soil, concrete or a deck that can hold water. Prepare a flat platform and align bearers so the pack cannot sag. APA's field-storage detail recommends keeping unavoidable outdoor stacks off the ground on at least three supports and isolating them from ground moisture.

Avoid crushing edges with forklift forks, slings or bands. Do not drag corners; broken corners and damaged tongue-and-groove joints can prevent proper fit. When packs are stacked, align upper and lower bearers vertically. Follow supplier limits for stack height, lifting method and pack weight.

Cover the stack without trapping moisture

A dry, enclosed and ventilated store is best. If outdoor storage is unavoidable, provide sloped temporary protection against rain while retaining air movement. Protect from ground moisture as well as water from above.

An airtight wrap around a wet pack can slow drying and retain condensation. Slope the cover, drain water away and secure it safely against wind. In humid coastal locations, also consider morning condensation and the effect of salt-laden air on fasteners.

Brief wetting does not mean every panel must be discarded, but grade, duration, swelling, surface damage and structural duty must be assessed together. APA's guidance on excessive moisture exposure recommends judging serviceability after re-drying according to the damage observed. Do not decide structural suitability by appearance alone without manufacturer or professional advice.

Remove standing water, ventilate both faces and do not trap moisture beneath roofing membrane, cladding or finished flooring. Touch is not a moisture test; where a limit is specified, use a calibrated meter and the prescribed method. Seek technical assessment for mould, persistent odour, separation, severe edge swelling or suspected loss of fastener holding.

Read the mark, orientation and spacing details

The panel mark may identify its strength axis. Roof and floor sheathing is commonly installed with that axis perpendicular to supports, but the product stamp, layout and manufacturer's instructions control. Face orientation and tongue-and-groove engagement also depend on the particular product.

Wood-based panels move as moisture changes. Forcing panels together with no allowance can contribute to buckling. Take edge and perimeter gaps, fastener type, spacing and edge distance from the product detail rather than applying one memorised figure to every brand. Supports must be dry, level, aligned and able to hold the fasteners.

Treat the roof as one system

OSB, membrane, shingles or metal roofing, ventilation and insulation work as a system. Condensation below the deck cannot be solved simply by changing the top layer. Indoor humidity, vapour control, airtightness, ventilation and drainage must be coordinated.

Apply membrane or shingles only to a dry, clean, even substrate accepted by their manufacturer. Covering wet OSB can restrict drying; loose strands, swollen edges and proud fasteners can telegraph through the finish. For structural, fire, wind-uplift or waterproofing-critical work, follow the approved system detail and engineer's design.
